Broken Promises
Madeline Sullivan, '18

You trusted them
          They broke it.
You turn around
                              only to find a knife.

There you go again,
          Building those walls.
The walls that took so long
                              So long to
                                        tear
                                                  down.

This time rebuilding
Stronger than before.

It will take twice as long to trust again
Twice as long to be let in.

It's not my fault you can’t get in
          I’m sorry I still hurt.
You can go ask the one who did this,
You can ask them
                              why?

You can ask them why they hurt me
Why they hurt me even after they promised not to.

Because if I knew

I’d let you in.
But maybe you would be another
                    broken
                              promise
                                        to me.
