Generations\nStephanie Dushay, '16\n\nA room of shades.\nMy cousins in black,\nsome I haven\u2019t seen in years;\nmy mom, somber in a long skirt,\ntorn black ribbon affixed above her breast pocket.\nThe coffin is wheeled in, squeaky on the temple floor\n(she almost swatted that fly, Mom confides later -\nher mother hated insects)\nand we rise and sit and stand again.\nThe walls are filled with bodies.\n\nTheir names are written in gold\n(-plated nickel)\nand coins balance\nagainst the curve of my grandmother\u2019s \u2018y\u2019.\n\nOn the way home, Mother wipes her face,\nribbon still pinned to her jacket,\nwads of tissues in her pockets. I think she\u2019s used them all this week.\nDad coughs in the front seat, still battling the cold\nfrom a month ago. He didn\u2019t want to make her leave, and she\ndidn\u2019t want to tell him when to go, but we all have to sleep\nand we have to be home by Tuesday.\nWhen did I become the one\nto tell us when to go?\n\nWhen do I become the one\nwho places rocks above their names?\n<\/pre>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
